No-exam life insurance

Who qualifies for streamlined underwriting, how it works, and what to expect if you don't qualify.

Many carriers now use streamlined underwriting: for applicants in their target age and amount range, they make a decision from the application, prescription history, driving record, and other data rather than ordering a medical exam. Some decisions come back the same day. Every quote tells you whether an exam is required, might be required, or won't be needed.

What it changes

No exam doesn't mean no review. Your answers get checked, and if an issued policy has incorrect information, a carrier can challenge it in the first two years. If the carrier finds questions in its own data, it may still ask for an exam or labs, and you can decide whether to continue.

Who tends to qualify

Generally applicants under about 60, applying for typical amounts, with no serious health conditions and no tobacco use in the past year. If you've had recent bloodwork, some carriers take those results instead of requiring a new exam.

An exam usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, happens at your home or office in the Compton area, and is free to you. For applicants in good health, the results often help your rate class, so having an exam can actually work in your favor.
